The purpose of an undergravel filter is to improve biological filtration by drawing aquarium water through the gravel bed.
Upper layers of the gravel contain nitrifying bacteria that break down harmful fish waste (ammonia and nitrite). Fish waste can be quickly detoxified by bacteria when water is forced through the gravel.
