In its natural environment, a reptile has exposure to direct light from the sun, which as well as consisting of the optical light with which we are familiar, also has a significant ultraviolet light content. This ultraviolet energy is an important factor , as it leads to a chemical reaction in the skin, which leads to the formation of vitamin D3, without which calcium metabolism cannot occur properly and the animal's skeleton cannot develop properly. When a pet reptile is not exposed to direct sunlight, the resulting vitamin D3 deficiency can cause bone weakness and deformity. Other hard structures such as scales, claws and shell in turtles will also be negatively affected without sunlight. These lights should be used with a T8 controller, such as the Arcadia light controller and a reflector (optional) for nearly double the output efficiency. For maximum enjoyment of your terrarium/vivarium, we recommend replacing your Reptile Systems light at least once a year.
