It is made of crushed natural materials that absorb ammonia and bleach. It can also keep nitrates from rising. Removing these from the aquarium prevents rapid growths of algae which in turn causes the aquarium to stink, reduces the chances of disease, and increases oxygen in the water. It also exchanges harmful heavy metal ions for non-harmful ones.
